Nobody wants to be called a beginner. And not everyone feels ready to walk into something labeled advanced. So why are we still structuring classes this way?
In this episode, Kayleigh makes the case for ditching the beginner and advanced labels entirely and explains why teaching all levels classes well is actually the skill that separates good instructors from great ones.
What we cover in this episode:
- Why the word “beginner” is hurting your class enrollment before anyone even walks through the door
- Why “advanced” is more intimidating than motivating for most clients
- How to teach a truly all levels class that meets every person in the room where they are
- The language shift that changes everything, why Kayleigh never uses the word “modification” and what she says instead
- How to offer options without creating a hierarchy in your class
- The difference between offering modifications for different levels and accommodating an injury, and why those are two very different things
- When a group class is no longer the right fit for a client and what to suggest instead
The big idea:
Every exercise exists on a spectrum. Your job as an instructor isn’t to sort people into levels, it’s to teach the whole spectrum and let people find where they are on it that day. That’s what makes clients feel seen and it’s what makes them come back.
